rant about renoir

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 6, 2008, 7:59 PM
  • Mood: Rant
  • Listening to: profiad by carreg lafar
  • Reading: everything
  • Eating: potato soup, steak, sushi!!!
  • Drinking: coke! Pina coladas and strawberry daquiris
ok, I need to rant about something, and since this is kind of a question, please actually respond? I need some real opinions about this.

ok, on to the rant. What the hell is so great about Renoir? Why does everyone go gaga over him? I think he's a terrible artist. His pictures are sappy, his basic anatomy is wrong, his brushstrokes are off. It's like their oozy or something. And he blends the wrong colors so the effect is off. All his models walk around with vapid expressions on their faces. All his women are the same person, even when it looks like he was intending to portray different types of people. His nudes are out of proportion, bulbous and grotesque.

it's not that I don't appreciate impressionism. I love impressionism. One of my favourite artists of all time, Mary Cassat, is an impressionist. I also like Degas, Manet, and some of Monet's stuff. Monet has a similar blurred style to Renoir, so it's not the blurred style that I can't appreciate. Renoir's is just so unformed. So mushy. I just think he's a bad artist. Which is why it really bothers me why he's considered one of the greatest Impressionists and is one of the better known ones, when Cassat isn't even in most books about Impressionism. Maybe because she's a woman?

Why Renoir?

If you see something profound there, please let me know, so that I can understand this mysterious phenomenon more. I just don't get why he's so popular. Usually, if I don't like something and a lot of other people do, I can at least understand why other people like it. But this just mystifies me. And if you also detest Renoir, please let me know. It would be nice to know that I'm not the only artist who hates Renoir.

I tried to look up artistic criticism both positive and negative about him so I could find out about both sides. There were no negatice reviews that I could find. Maybe I was just looking in the wrong place. there were several glowing reviews talking about how profound his artwork was, but they did not explain convincingly just why it was so profound.

I do not begrudge anyone their opinion. If you love him and he's your favorite artist, then I'm truly glad that you've find an artist to inspire you, and I'm sorry you had to read this rant. If you're completely ambivalent, then I am also glad, because you won't have to waste any strong feelings on this. And if you hate him like I do, then I'm extremely glad, as I've found someone who share's my dislike of him.

that being said, please reply! I'm very curious to find out what your responses might be!!!!!

no, I'm trying to start working from life. I'm doing a lot of self portraits using mirrors (since I don't have access to models), but I haven't posted any of those yet. I will soon!
